Aramco monitors its air emissions and, where necessary, implements measures to reduce their impact on our workforce, local communities, and the environment.
Sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions
We are leveraging tail gas treatment units to support our compliance with applicable SOx regulations.In 2025, Aramco’s sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions were 164.8 metric kilotons — an increase compared to 2024, due to rising gas processing activities occasioned by higher natural gas demand.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
In 2025 we piloted new technologies at our Riyadh Refinery, created to detect, monitor, and respond to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the refinery’s evaporation ponds.Evaporation ponds are large lined basins that use sunlight and heat to evaporate wastewater, concentrating harmful contaminants into solid residue, facilitating disposal or containment, while preventing wastewater from seeping into and polluting groundwater. The ponds are essential for the disposal of refinery wastewater.
The monitoring system includes high-resolution visual and thermal infrared cameras, advanced AI-enabled multigas-sensing detectors, a global positioning system, and industrial drones.
