Discover how an oasis was born out of one boy’s dream.
Meet Hassan
Hassan grew up in Al Qatif on the Eastern shores of the Arabian Gulf. As a boy, he’d swim in the sea, playing in the lush thickets of mangrove forests, accompanied by his Uncle Jamal.
As the years passed, however, the mangroves, and the wildlife that relied on them, began to vanish. Hassan recalled the wise words of his Uncle: “The need to protect our beautiful land is a duty, more than a choice.”
Now an adult, Hassan has dedicated much of his life to restoring these mangroves, and helping to establish Aramco’s mangrove program.
His story shows how a child’s deep affection for the natural world can make change happen.
Aramco’s mangrove program
Mangroves thrive along the shore, where they stabilize coastlines and provide food and shelter for hundreds of species of marine life. This tropical tree acts as a carbon sink, absorbing and storing CO₂ up to 5 times faster than terrestrial trees.
Aramco has planted millions of mangroves and established a mangrove program, which are expected to collectively sequester and store tons of CO₂ over the lifetime of the trees, whilst preserving the Kingdom’s biodiversity.
